Darren J Bennett AAIPP
Darren and his images are unique; he is a highly motivated individual driven by his instincts and enthusiasm, a desire to capture and produce images that evoke the spirit of place and land.
Darren was born in Lorne, along the Great Ocean Rd, which is why the coastline is in his blood and that’s why he has such a strong connection to this famous stretch of the Victorian coastline – the crashing waves and the pounding of the ocean were there to greet him on his arrival into this world. And over time, Darren has come to realize the great potential and endless photographic opportunities that the coastal areas have to offer, away from the main tourist locations that draw people to these amazing coastal routes year after year.
The land and sea provide Darren with elements of light, colour, form and subject matter which really reflect the kind of images he loves. In his own words Darren quotes: ‘I try to view the ordinary in an extra-ordinary way, using different angles and available light at the right time of day to highlight the essence of a particular view; a perspective that might be easily missed by the casual observer’.
One of the immediate attributes noticed in Darren’s work is colour – rich, deep, vibrant colour. Other images are evocative (particularly his Black and White images), engaging symbols of age and decay, invoking thoughts of isolation and lonesomeness which somewhat represent the life of a landscape photographer, alone with the land.
Photography is a real test of patience and persistence, a never-ending battle against the natural elements and mother nature, a battle that is all too often lost. With persistence, you can walk away with the trophy, ‘the magical image’. In seeking to create images presenting a different point of view – using photography to establish a mood through subject matter which seems out of the ordinary, but is, in reality, of the ordinary. Darren approaches his work with a sense of artistry, demonstrating his skills and craftsmanship from camera to print.
Darren is fast becoming one of Australia’s premier Land- and Seascape Photographers with many awards and exhibitions to his name. He has a Diploma in Illustrative Photography from Photography Studies College and a Diploma in Photojournalism from the Australian College of Journalism. He has worked as a photographer for Fairfax News, Western Water, Brimbank and Melton Shire Councils and others, is Vice President and Digital Group Coordinator of the Melbourne Camera Club, and in 2010 was awarded ‘Photographer Of The Year’. In 2010, Darren became a member of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) and in 2013 received his Associate Status. Darren will be conducting workshops in Seascape and Landscape Photography throughout the year, so if you are interested in learning or improving your Photographic skills in these areas, you can email or call him to reserve your place in the groups.
